What Every Coach Needs Before Launching Their Business

Joe Speredon7 min read

I’ve talked to hundreds of coaches who’ve come through our coaching business program, and the pattern is always the same. New coaches, experienced coaches, ones who’ve been at it for two years and still aren’t making the money they want. In almost every case, the problem isn’t their coaching.

The problem is what’s missing around the coaching. The foundations that nobody told them they needed before they went out and started posting and pitching and hoping.

So before you launch anything — before you buy the software, before you hire the photographer, before you post the announcement that you’re “officially open for clients” — here’s what you actually need.

Foundation 1: A Clear Answer to “What Do You Do?”

Not a mission statement. Not a three-sentence bio. One clear sentence that tells someone exactly who you help and what changes for them. That’s it.

If you can’t say it plainly, in language a friend would understand over coffee, then you don’t have clarity yet. And without clarity, everything else you do is going to be harder than it needs to be.

“Most coaches know why they coach. They struggle to say what they actually do in a way that makes someone think — yes, that’s exactly what I need.”

Getting clear on your niche — the specific person you help and the specific problem you solve — isn’t limiting. It’s the thing that makes you findable. Every coaching business program worth its salt starts here, because when you’re trying to help everyone, you end up helping no one.

Foundation 2: An Offer with a Price and a Process

A lot of coaches launch before they actually have an offer. They have a vague sense of what they do, maybe a general “coaching package,” but nothing defined enough that someone could buy it without needing to ask ten clarifying questions.

Your first offer needs to have three things: a clear outcome, a defined process, and a price. Ideally, it’s simple enough that you can explain it in two sentences and someone immediately knows whether it’s for them or not.

It doesn’t have to be your forever offer. It just has to be specific enough that you can actually sell it — and deliver it — without making it up as you go.

Foundation 3: A Page That Doesn’t Embarrass You

Your Instagram bio does not count as a website. A Linktree is not a system. A Google Doc with your packages is not a landing page.

I say this not to be harsh but because coaches undersell themselves every single day by showing up with incredible skill and then sending people to something that communicates the opposite. The backend of your business tells people whether to trust you with something important.

You don’t need a 20-page website. You need one page that tells people who you are, what you offer, why it works, and how to say yes. That’s it. But that page needs to exist and it needs to not look like you threw it together the night before.

Foundation 4: A Way to Get Paid Without Manual Back-and-Forth

Before you get a client, figure out how you’re going to collect their payment. Set up a checkout link. Know what platform you’re using. Have this working before you need it.

There is nothing worse than someone saying yes and then you spending three days trying to figure out how to send them an invoice. That gap — between yes and payment — is where deals fall apart. Make it seamless.

Foundation 5: A Simple Way to Book and Track Calls

One calendar link. One place where clients can see what calls they have. One place where you keep your notes from those calls. These things don’t have to be sophisticated — but they have to exist and they have to be connected enough that you’re not managing it all in your head.

Coaches who are running their business out of their brain and their inbox are the ones who burn out fastest. Not because coaching is hard, but because all the surrounding admin is eating them alive. This is exactly what a good coaching business program helps you systematize from day one.

What Happens When You Skip These Coaching Business Program Foundations

You launch. You post. Maybe you get a few people interested. Then the process of actually working with them reveals all the gaps — the unclear onboarding, the missing payment process, the booking back-and-forth, the absence of a real system to manage them through.

Most coaches then decide the problem is their message, or their niche, or their price. But the problem is usually just the infrastructure. The coaching business program foundations that should have been built before the launch.

The Coaching Business Program That Builds All of This With You

Spending 8 weeks building all of this properly, before you scale, is not the slow path. It’s the one that saves you from rebuilding everything 18 months in when you’re more exhausted and more skeptical.

CompleteCoach is a coaching business program that walks you through every piece of this — your niche, your offer, your messaging, your tech, your system — with Joe and Kirsten building it alongside you. 24 live calls over 8 weeks. And a step-by-step app that writes your landing pages, emails, and offer documents in your voice as you go.

You come out the other side with a real business — not the idea of one.
